Quick Note on How Dermatologists Treat Acne
With so much media dollars spent to convince us about the next best acne treatment, I observed 1st hand scientifically proven methods, that work…
Acne is due to 3 problems:
- Increased production of Sebum (“oil”)
- Increased density of bacteria (P. acnes) that promotes #3
- Inflammatory cell invasion, causing the red nodule or cyst
So to treat acne, it is wise to make sure all 3 bases are covered.
Treatment regiments must be customized with your dermatologist or a well versed family doctor, but I will discuss the most common:
Females - Birth control pills are really, really unbelievable! Sometimes, just the pill alone clears everything, but most of the time more is needed.
Most Common Plan:
Morning - Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser 2.5 - 5%
Night - Topical Retinoic Acid (Retin A, Tazorac, Differin). I call this the miracle cream! Retinoic Acid is the best invention ever…. for skin.
Antibiotics - topical kind should be avoided, oral work best (Minocycline/Doxycycline). Take by mouth, daily
