// After 4 years the data shows those persons consuming foods most consistent with a “Mediterranean Diet” scored the best in the physical and mental health assessments

// My take - this is only 4 years of data from a relatively healthy cohort to begin with… Regardless, this gives more weight to Dan Buettner’s Blue Zones, two of five in the Mediterranean (Sardinia, Italy and Icaria, Greece)

Dr. George Vaillet’s analysis in Aging Well, a book that chronicles and reflects upon the findings of three groundbreaking prospective studies that assessed and interviewed individuals for six to eight decades. On page 13, he lists the common traits they found that tended to lead to being considered “happy/well” at age 80:

It’s not the bad things that happen to you that doom you; it’s the good people who happen to us at any age that facilitate enjoyable old age.

Healthy relationships are facilitated by a capacity for gratitude, for forgiveness, and for taking people inside.

A good marriage at age 50 predicted positive aging at 80. But surprisingly, low cholesterol levels at age 50 did not.

Alcohol abuse consistently predicted unsuccessful aging, in part because alcoholism damaged future social supports.

Learning to play and create after retirement and learning to gain younger friends as we lose older ones add more to life’s enjoyment than retirement income.

Objective good physical health was less important to successful aging than subjective good health … It is all right to be ill as long as you do not feel sick.

The Lancet - 1 Aspirin a day keeps Cancer away!

The Lancet - 1 Aspirin a day keeps Cancer away!:
// This was a review of 51 randomized controlled trials, including almost 78,000 patients

Alongside the previously reported reduction by aspirin of the long-term risk of cancer death, the short-term reductions in cancer incidence and mortality and the decrease in risk of major extracranial bleeds with extended use, and their low case-fatality, add to the case for daily aspirin in prevention of cancer.

When I first started this blog, several years ago, I envisioned it as a place to educate my social network through the awesome community of Tumblr and my close friends of Facebook. The focus was, is, and will be medicine. This blog is the manifestation of my passion for teaching, learning, and sharing! I don’t know why I love educating, learning and sharing, but I do. I love talking to my friends who learned something new through my posts on this blog. I love responding to emails of people I have never met because of something that I posted! I have made new friends, and even started a new business (currently in development) because of this blog!

As a medical student, one of the most important days is Match Day, when our Residency plans are revealed. Today I was honored to find out that I matched at my #1 residency. I will spend the next 5 years part of the Harvard Med-Derm program. My Medicine training will be at Beth-Israel, and the Dermatology training at all three affiliated hospitals. Times like these make us reflect upon the people who have pushed us, supported us, and always believed in us. As I celebrate tonight, I want to thank those people again.

Congratulations to my fellow students who matched today, cheers to that! And to the next five years in Boston!

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States, and young people are most affected. Because people often do not have symptoms, many infections go undetected and untreated. Untreated chlamydia can have severe long-term health consequences, particularly for young women, including chronic pelvic pain, potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy and infertility.

For physicians, one of the attractive features of the milestones concept and the focus on outcomes is the possibility of more flexibility in residency length. If, say, a family medicine resident can meet all the milestones in two years rather than three, there’s no reason the doctor could not complete the residency and enter into practice.
